Hook Up
Sportfishing Charters
Once again, here is the most comprehensive Fish Report in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Unfortunately, this is also one of our most dismal reports because there just are no fish. Not only that but there are no anglers here either. More on the lack of anglers latter. Unfortunately for several months now, I regret to report, the fishing outside the Los Cabos Marina has been slow to non-existent. Okay you fishing addicts you have the quickie picture. Now, when Striper Marlin are hooked up they have been mostly located out of the marina directly towards the 95 spot only a twenty minute run. Next, Stripers have been spotted and some caught at the 1150. Many charter boats have been trolling between the 95 and the 1150 all targeting Striper Marlin. Both areas are on the Sea of Cortez side of Cabo. So fishing enthusiasts, we have been limited to these areas as the Pacific has emptied and the water is colder too. There has been some inshore fishing where Grouper and Spanish Mackerel have been taken. All near and or along the shoreline on the Pacific side. First directly as you make the right hand turn the Pedregalito Beach arrives and this area is being fished for the Grouper.
Now, time to feature the Fishing Warriors who have Hooked Up on our
Hook Up Fishing Charter boats. Readers, first I apologize that it has been too
many weeks since the last fish report however I want to feature anglers from
late April just because I want too. So, about the end of April, when some Tuna
were being caught out on the Pacific at San Jaime Bank, Tom Drell was taken
there on our Hook Up I. Mr. Drell, from Jacksonville Florida, hooked up and
caught 14 Yellowfin Tuna plus 3 real nice Dorado. At days end back into the
slip he exclaimed, " The crew was great and worked very hard to make our Cabo
fishing experience great! Will definitely recommend Hook Up." ( See the
picture on Hook Up I)
Then Chip Derrick, one of our real loyal clients who has
fished on Hook Up many times before, traveled once again from Anchorage Alaska
for one more try. This was at April's end and his Friend and our Captain Alex
headed for the Golden Gate where Chip captured one Striper Marlin and two nice
Dorado ( See his picture on Hook Up). Chip told us that, "Alex and Marco
(deckhand) are a great fishing team. They do know how to put you on a fish and
then Hook Up." Thanks Chip for the kind words and you faithful support.
Traveling all the way from B.C. Canada to fish Cabo San Lucas on our Hook Up I
Charter boat came James Emslie. James fishing with a buddy had a wonderfully
great day. He caught 2-Yellowtail (mighty fine eating) 5 Spanish Mackerel and a
15 pound squid. James said, "The crew did a great job!"
Usually I now recap the reports week. Already I simply informed you it is sincerely real slow, okay bad, fishing in Cabo. That in itslef would be a reason that anglers are not coming to Cabo San Lucas. But wait, we all realize there is more. This swine flu has made the streets of Los Cabos empty. I mean Cabo downtown looks almost like a ghost town. Restaurants empty, shopkeepers simply standing alone by the doors, hotel rooms not occupied and yes fishing charter boats not going out much as a result. I shall go out on a limb here and at least express my thoughts. First, I sincerely believe that this swine flu is way over-rated. In fact not one case has been reported in Cabo. I heard a Doctor on the news in America express that 100 people a day usually die of the flu and yet only very few cases have been reported and almost none have died. Cabo is a real fun vacation destination with bright blue sky sun filled days whispers of gentle breezes and or stronger gusting winds only cooling one off from temperatures into the eighties and now nineties. Great food, some of the most beautiful beaches I have even seen and tons of things to do including fishing. What's my point? Okay, the fishing, er um stinks, however if you mainly were looking for the good times of a restful leisurely "get away from it all" adventure please come on down to Cabo San Lucas. Now, for those that say, "Paul, that is easy for you to say," simply remember that I too am an American traveling here every month for weeks at a time and I have No Worries & No Fear. You see I just love Cabo and Cabo is my life. You'll love it also so feel invited.

Best Fishing Locations
The best fishing locations in Cabo San Lucas during this
reporting period was at the 95 the 1150 and all areas in-between these two high
spots. And these areas are located in the Sea of Cortez. Should you not be
familiar with where this is go to our Hook Up web menu on the left column at
CABO INFO then "click-on" Cabo Hot Spots. For Grouper and Spanish Mackerel
close into shore areas have been productive mostly on the Pacific like
Pedregalito near the arch around the corner to Los Arcos area.
One wonderful item to report is that the Cabo San Lucas weather
has been magnificent. I mean it is like summer is definitely here. Daytime
outside air temperatures are running consistently in the low 90's F. Bouncing
around from 91-93 F degrees in fact. Skies have been mostly our Cabo Blue clear
with occasional few scattered cloud at 20,000 feet. Winds have been varied from
o.o MPH to real gusty at 12-15 MPH mostly from the South East. However, on
these real hot days these breezes are welcomed. Nighttime air temperatures at a
comfortable 75-77 F degrees at that is at the coolest point. Dinnertime still
in the eighties. Yes, T-Shirt weather. Visibility holding each day at 15
miles. As to the UV Factor we have an ALERT! Really running high at 11 of 16
so do wear sun-screen please. Remember you are 1,000 to 2,000 miles or more
below of where your are living more south and that sun is dangerous. Humidity
at 35-45% so till low and comfortable.
Let us examine the sea weather conditions. The mornings have had light winds
with a small chop and long period swells. Winds WNW at 7-10 knots. Seas SSW
at 4 feet 14 second periods. Afternoons a little different story. Here are
breezy whitecapping conditions with moderate choppy seas with small long period
swells. Winds WNW with 11-15 knots. Seas SSW at 4 feet 13 second periods.
Let us take a look first of where we are finding Striper Marlin and that is out on the Sea of Cortez. The 95 is holding at 73 F degrees while just 15-20 miles away at the 1150, further East/NE it jumps up to as high as 78 F degrees. Cabrillo is also at 78 F while Gorda Bank is more like the 95 at 73-74 F. Along the shoreline on the Sea of Cortes to an area just above Gorda we find water at 72-73 F. For those who care out into the Pacific Ocean at the Golden Gate, or Double "G" Spot, surface water temperatures are at 63-64 F degrees. Same for San Jaime Bank. This cooler water drooped in from the North and has been holding there for about a month now. The break along the coast from the Pacific 64 F degrees to the Sea of Cortez 71 then 73 F water is exactly at the Lands End out of Cabo.
Whats Working?
Best bet is Mackerel live bait purchased from a panga at the
Marina as you begin your fishing day. Trolling Mean Joe Green type colors.

Cabo San Lucas Average Weather Chart
Our Cabo San Lucas, Mexico Average Weather Chart is seen below No doubt about it, that Cabo San Lucas is the perfect destination not just for fishing big game species like Marlin, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo but for vacationing as well. Why, you ask? Because not only is Cabo one of the worlds hottest fishing spots, usually thought of as the Fishing Capital of the World, but with about 340 days of sunny warm weather resting under the Cabo Blue skies makes it paradise. Even during the much warmer summer months, with Cabo San Lucas situated at Lands End on the tip of Baja, there is always a nice cooler breeze blowing from the Sea of Cortez or Pacific Ocean sides making it comfortable. Also, sea water temperatures at the beach range from 75-85 degrees perfect for beach goers. Winter months too are most pleasant with with many crystal clear days and still warm sunshine days. Visibility usually 10-15 miles.
