Cabo Fishing Information
This chart illustrates the general rule of what is usually caught in the nutrient rich waters just off Cabo shores. However, fishing is fishing and at times the bit is real hot when not expected. For example there has been one terrific hot bite for Stripper Marlin in January and February during the years of 2004 through 2007 as this was written.
In the world Cabo San Lucas is one of the Hot Fishing Destinations. It's right at the
top with Kona Hawaii. and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. All have their own
unique ways to fish them and Cabo is no exception. The fishing techniques that you
have learned on your local fishing grounds might not apply to fishing Cabo.
Cabo, with the Pacific Ocean colliding with the Sea of Cortez just off Lands End, is
defiantly different and the local fishermen have mastered techniques that work the best
to hook up. Sometimes Stripper Marlin are actually caught just drifting live bait and
most the time trolling at 8-10 knots. The crew knows well the bait and switch
techniques and when the feeders are working run and gun. Just realize that Cabo is
unique and depend upon your seasoned Cabo local Captain and Deckhand to allow you
to catch fish.
One great consideration about fishing Cabo is the many choices of where to fish. With
the Pacific just a right turn and the Sea of Cortez going left is it no wonder that Cabo
is one of the worlds best and most unique fishing destinations. Most fishing is found
4-10 miles out. However spots like the Golden Gate are about 25 miles taking longer
to get you there. Be assured though if the Hot Bite is out there Hook Up Sportfishing
Boats will take you there.
All our Hook Up Sport Fishing boats are fully equipped with everything you will
need. Reels for trolling are the high quality Penn lntemationale's and drop back bait
casting are either Penn, Shimano or Daiwa. Rods are mostly custom made to match
and all gear and are the same that Captain Martin and Paul, the owners, use
themselves. "We know what we love, we know what works and our Charter boats
have this gear", they say. Want to bring your own gear? No problem, your may bring
your own and use it!
There are several options of what to do with fish caught. Most like to take their catch
home for themselves and to share with family and friends. If you desire to take your
catch home bring an Ice Chest. Please note that the airlines will not allow the
Styrofoam types. Also, if you need, ice chests can be purchased in Cabo. After
arriving back at the dock there are people there who, for a fee, will clean and prepare
your fish packed into freezer bags. All hotels will freeze your catch and store until you
are ready to go home.
Should you not want to take fish home you have two more options. You may share
some with your crew and/or take some fish to a local Cabo restaurant. Almost all
restaurants in Cabo will accept your fish and prepare it in a most tasty way of even
your choice. They will add side dishes and you'll find the cost for dinner, with your
fish, is extreamly reasonable.
